The Revolution is Twisting Through Us

Good morning, beautiful beings.

If you read last week’s email, you already know: May is the month of revolution. Not just in the world around us—but within our bodies, our breath, and the sacred spaces we create on the mat.

Each week this month, we’re exploring revolved poses—postures that challenge our balance, shift our perspective, and ask us to embrace change from the inside out.

Week One: Parivrtta Trikonasana (Revolved Triangle Pose)

Let’s begin where we began—with Triangle Pose. On its own, Trikonasana is already a bold declaration. With two straight legs, two extended arms, and a spine that stretches in all directions, Triangle asks us to take up space—unapologetically. It’s a pose of expansion and clarity. It roots us in strength while lifting us into light.

But then… we revolve.

Suddenly, we’re not just holding the shape—we’re transforming within it. To revolve is to soften and engage at once. To lengthen before twisting. To honor the space before we change it. And that, my loves, is where the true revolution lives—not in force, but in creating room for change.

As I moved through this pose last week, something subtle but profound shifted. I stood up just a little taller. My spine felt wrung out in the best way—like I’d released something heavy I’d been carrying for too long. I didn’t just feel taller on the mat. I stood taller in my life.

Standing Up by Laying Down

That newfound height showed up in the way I spoke to people. In the way I honored my time. And—maybe most importantly—in the way I finally stood up for myself…

by taking a break.

If you know me, you know I’ve been in go-mode for months. Between my day job, teaching, cutting hair, volunteering, planning Pride events, building community—my days have been full. Beautiful, but full. I couldn’t remember the last time I had a full day off.

Even when I cut back my hours at work a few months ago, I filled the space with more doing. More giving.

Sound familiar?

Last weekend, I chose something radical:
I rested.

I turned down the volume of the outside world and listened to the wisdom of my body. I let myself be. I didn’t apologize. I didn’t earn it. I just… stopped. And that, in a culture that celebrates burnout and glorifies overwork, was revolutionary.

Because here’s the truth I keep coming back to:

I cannot pour into others from an empty cup.

As the world around us shifts—climate collapse, political unrest, trans rights under attack—I remember: my strength is sacred. My rest is sacred. My energy matters.

There is no reward for self-erasure.
There is no trophy for burnout.
There is only the quiet knowing: I am worthy of care.

And so are you.

Week Two: Parivrtta Sirsasana (Revolved Headstand)

This week, we’re taking the revolution upside down.

Revolved Headstand—Parivrtta Sirsasana—isn’t just a pose. It’s a practice in surrender and strength. It’s a mirror for how we meet the unknown.

Inversion already asks us to flip our viewpoint. Add a twist, and suddenly we’re navigating rotation inside disorientation. We’re asked to stay steady while everything turns around us—physically, emotionally, energetically.

Sound familiar?

In a time where it feels like the world is spinning faster every day, this posture invites us to:

  • Root down even when we’re upside down.

  • Revolve with intention, not fear.

  • Find clarity in chaos.

  • Create spaciousness where it once felt tight.

Whether you join me in full headstand, take a variation, or find a gentler revolved shape, know this:

You don’t need to be perfect to participate in your own revolution.
You just need to show up. To breathe. To turn toward yourself with tenderness.

✨ Aza
